A Comparison of All Routes
There were six of you on vacation. Four had iPhones, and two had Android phones. Everyone took pictures. And now you’re all sitting there, and no one knows how to put the pictures together.
This isn’t a user error. It’s a loophole that two corporations have left open for years—and one that has only recently begun to close. Here’s a look at the options that will actually be available in 2026, how effective they are, and when each one is the right choice.
Why There’s a Problem in the First Place
Two things are standing in the way.
The live broadcast was separated from the warehouse for a long time. AirDrop works between Apple devices. Quick Share works between Android devices. Between them: nothing. Anyone who wanted to cross that boundary had to take cumbersome detours.
The file format isn’t always compatible. By default, iPhones save photos as HEIC files. This saves space, but these files may not open properly on some Android phones, in older programs, or with certain printing services. The recipient will then see a file they can’t do anything with.
Both problems can be solved. It’s just that they can be solved to varying degrees of success.
Method 1: AirDrop and Quick Share – Recently Integrated
Starting in November 2025, Quick Share will work with AirDrop on Google Pixel phones. Photos are transferred directly from device to device, without going through a server, in their original quality.
The problem: So far, it only works on Pixel devices. Google has announced the rollout to other Android phones, but it hasn’t reached everyone yet. If you own a Samsung, Xiaomi, or Motorola, depending on the model, you’re still out of luck. On top of that, so far only the “For everyone, for 10 minutes” AirDrop mode works.
When it works: Two people, a room, a few pictures. Quick and hassle-free.
When not to use it: As soon as more than two people are involved, or if someone isn’t in the same room. AirDrop and Quick Share are point-to-point transfers. They’re not the right tools for a situation like “all 80 wedding guests are sending me their photos.”
Option 2: Messaging via RCS
This has quietly improved, and many people haven’t noticed: Since iOS 18, the iPhone has supported RCS, the successor to SMS and MMS. With iOS 26, it has become the norm. Photos and videos can now be sent between iPhones and Android devices in full quality—the old 300-KB limit for MMS is gone.
The problem: It’s still just a chat. The images are scattered throughout the conversation history, with no order and no captions. When there are multiple senders, things quickly get confusing. And end-to-end encryption in Germany still depends on the mobile carrier—Telekom, O2, and 1&1 support it, but as of July 2026, Vodafone did not.
When it’s appropriate: Sending a few photos to one person, with no extra effort.
When not to: When you want something to remain. A chat isn’t an archive.
Option 3: WhatsApp
The path that almost everyone takes because almost everyone has it.
The problem: By default, WhatsApp significantly reduces the size of images and videos. What you end up with is good enough for viewing on a cell phone—but often not for a print or a printed book.
Here’s what helps: WhatsApp has been able to send “HD” content for some time now. When sending a message, tap the HD icon, or go to Settings > Storage and Data and set the media upload quality to HD permanently. For even less loss of quality: send the photo as a document instead of as an image—that way, the original file is preserved.
You need to know both of these things and keep them in mind every time. In practice, nobody does that.
When it’s appropriate: To quickly show a picture.
When not to: If you’ll still need the photos a year from now.
Method 4: Shared Albums
Google Photos works on both systems, making it the most convenient of the traditional methods. However, anyone who wants to upload photos needs a Google account—and that’s often the stumbling block for the very people who have the most beautiful old photos.
Shared iCloud albums are convenient as long as everyone uses Apple. In Germany, that’s about 28 percent of the population. If you want to include the rest, you’ll need something else.
When it’s a good fit: A close-knit group that already uses the same account ecosystem.
When not to: Mixed groups, elderly relatives, impromptu groups of guests.
Method 5: Cloud Folders and Transfer Services
Dropbox, OneDrive, WeTransfer, and similar services work across platforms and preserve the original quality. They’re reliable—but they’re just folders. No order, no labels, no locations. And with file-sharing services, the links expire after a few days.
When it’s appropriate: Transferring a large amount of data from A to B just once.
When not to: When you want the pictures to turn out in a way that people will enjoy looking at them.
Solve the HEIC Problem in Thirty Seconds
If your iPhone photos don’t open in Android contacts, it’s usually because of the file format. Two settings can help:
Take new photos that are directly compatible: Settings → Camera → Formats → “Maximum Compatibility.” The iPhone will then save photos as JPEGs instead of HEICs. The files will be larger, but they’ll open on any device.
Convert automatically when transferring: Settings → Photos → at the very bottom under “Transfer to Mac or PC” → “Automatically.” The photos will then be converted to a common format during export.
If you take a lot of photos, you can keep the HEIC format and only convert them when you share them—but if you regularly send photos to mixed groups, the first setting will save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
And what about videos?
When it comes to videos, each of the avenues mentioned above becomes much more limited—and hardly anyone talks about this, even though videos are often the most valuable recordings of all. The voice, the way someone walks, their laugh—you don’t get that from a photo.
Here’s what happens in practice: A two-minute cell phone video can easily reach 300 to 500 MB. When sent via Messenger, it can only be transmitted after being heavily compressed. What arrives is a blurry, pixelated shadow of the original—recognizable by the fact that faces look mushy from two meters away and fast movements appear choppy.
It’s definitely over for email: Most providers block attachments larger than 20 to 25 MB.
AirDrop and Quick Share transfer files without any loss of quality—but only between two devices in the same room.
Cloud folders work, but they turn the video into a file in a list. No one wants to click through forty files with names like IMG_4471.MOV.
If you want to include videos as part of your memories, you need a place that can store them at a reasonable size and display them so they can be played right away—alongside the photos, in the same order, not in a separate folder.
How to Tell If an Image Has Been Compressed
Here’s a quick test before you rely on a collection: Open a photo and zoom in on a face or some text in the background. If the edges become jagged, skin tones become patchy, or text blurs to the point of being unreadable, the file has already been downsampled.
Second test: Check the file size. An original cell phone photo is usually between two and six megabytes. If it’s 200 kilobytes, someone must have compressed it heavily while on the go.
It’s important to remember: Quality is lost forever. Once an image has been compressed, it cannot be restored. That’s why it’s better to take the time to do it right before you start collecting—not after.
Which route, and when?
- Two people, one room, a few pictures: AirDrop/Quick Share, if both devices support it. Otherwise, RCS.
- Quickly share something: WhatsApp, with the HD toggle for important photos.
- A close-knit group with a shared account ecosystem: a shared album.
- Move a Large Number of Files at Once: Cloud Folder.
- Videos you want to remember: don’t share them via Messenger. Live stream when you’re together—otherwise, use a platform that supports full-size videos.
- Many people are supposed to contribute, and there should be something left over— neither of the approaches used so far works. To achieve this, we need a solution that works without installation and without an account.
